9 Curly Hair Care Tips That Actually Work

Curly hair isn't difficult — it's just different. Curls need moisture, gentle handling and the right products, and most of the damage comes from treating them like straight hair: brushing them dry, washing them too often, rubbing them with a towel. These nine tips work with your curl pattern instead of against it, and most of them cost nothing. Give them two weeks and your curls will show you the difference.

1. Wash Less Often

Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair, because the oils from your scalp have a harder time travelling down a spiral. Washing every day strips those oils away and leaves curls frizzy and thirsty. Most curl types do best washing two or three times a week — on the in-between days, just rinse with water or refresh the curls with a light spray. If your scalp feels oily at first, give it two weeks to adjust: it usually produces less oil once it stops being stripped daily.

2. Switch to a Sulfate-Free Shampoo

If your shampoo foams into a thick lather and leaves your hair squeaky clean, it's probably too harsh for curls. Sulfates are strong cleansers that strip away the natural oils curly hair desperately needs. A sulfate-free shampoo cleans gently without that stripped, tangled feeling, and your curls keep their moisture and shape. Read the label: look for "sulfate-free" and avoid sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. Your hair will feel softer after the very first wash.

3. Condition Every Time — and Detangle in the Shower

Never skip conditioner: it's the single most important step for curly hair. Apply it generously from the middle of your hair to the ends, let it sit for two or three minutes, and detangle while it's in. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, working from the ends upward, never from the roots down. Wet hair with conditioner is slippery and forgiving — dry detangling is what causes breakage and frizz. Rinse with cool water to help seal the cuticle and add shine.

4. Apply Products to Soaking Wet Hair

The biggest mistake in curly hair care is waiting until your hair is half dry. Styling products work best on soaking wet hair, when the curl pattern is at its clearest and the product can lock moisture inside. Right after your shower, while your hair is still dripping, smooth a leave-in conditioner through it, then a curl cream or gel. Work in sections and scrunch gently upward to encourage the curl shape. You'll use less product and get far more definition.

5. Scrunch, Don't Rub

How you dry your hair matters as much as what you put in it. Rubbing curls with a regular towel roughs up the hair cuticle and creates instant frizz — it's the fastest way to ruin a good wash day. Instead, scrunch your hair upward with your hands or a soft cotton T-shirt or microfiber towel, pressing the water out gently. The T-shirt trick alone transforms frizz for most people, and it costs nothing. Never wring your curls like a dishcloth.

6. Diffuse on Low — or Let It Air-Dry

A regular hair dryer blasts curls apart, but a diffuser changes everything. Attach the diffuser, set the dryer to low heat and low speed, and cup sections of hair into the bowl, holding it near your scalp for a few seconds at a time. It dries curls with their shape intact and adds volume at the roots. If you have time, air-drying works beautifully too — just don't touch your hair while it dries. Once it's fully dry, scrunch out the gel's crunchy cast with your hands for soft, bouncy curls.

7. Never Brush Dry Curls

A brush on dry curly hair is the quickest way to turn defined curls into a triangle of frizz. Curls clump together in their natural pattern, and brushing breaks those clumps apart. If you need to detangle, do it only on wet, conditioned hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb — never on dry hair, and never with a fine brush. On non-wash days, leave the brush in the drawer entirely and refresh your curls with water instead.

8. Protect Your Curls at Night

You can do everything right in the morning and lose it all overnight on a cotton pillowcase, which absorbs moisture and creates friction that frizzes curls. Switch to a satin or silk pillowcase, or wrap your hair in a satin bonnet before bed. Then try the pineapple trick: gather your curls loosely on top of your head with a soft scrunchie, so they don't get crushed while you sleep. In the morning, shake them out, refresh with a little water, and your curls are ready in minutes.

9. Deep Condition Weekly and Trim Regularly

Even the best routine needs a weekly boost. Once a week, apply a deep conditioning mask from mid-length to ends, leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes — a shower cap and a little warmth help it sink in — then rinse. It restores the moisture that daily life steals and keeps curls springy instead of limp. And don't skip trims: cutting off split ends every eight to twelve weeks keeps the curl pattern healthy and bouncy instead of stringy. Healthy ends are what make curls look full.

Curly hair rewards patience and punishes rough handling — but once you work with it, it does the beautiful part all by itself. Start with washing less and scrunching instead of rubbing, and build from there. Which of these tips is your curls' missing piece? Tell us in the comments!
